ISSUES TO CONSIDER
Marriage Ceremony and Contract
If the marriage occurs in Pakistan, bear in mind that it must be considered valid in the United States and/or Canada as well. Among the guidelines for valid marriages are age requirements (typically spouses must be at least 18 at the time of marriage or have parental consent), eligibility (groom and bride are legally single when they enter into the new marriage), and sole sponsorship (the suitor is not simultaneously sponsoring another spouse).
To become a permanent resident or citizen of the United States and/or Canada, your daughter must be sponsored by her potential husband. Sponsorship entails the suitor signing an agreement with the government to financially support his new bride for the period specified by immigration law.
Prior to marriage, it is critical for your daughter and the suitor to discuss their interests, preferences, and marital expectations to avoid potential fundamental problems in the future. The following 100 premarital questions were compiled by Imam Mohammed Magid of the Adams Center in Sterling, Virginia, USA.
